After graduating from St. Paul’s Secondary School in 1975, I went to Toronto to do my pre-university qualifications and then onto Carleton University in Ottawa, where I obtained a bachelor degree in journalism with English studies in 1979. Back here, I found my first niche at Agence France-Presse, the French news agency before I moved onto the HK Standard newspaper. In 1982, I was invited to join TVB news, where I was a reporter and anchor for about 3 years. That was the era when HK was wrapped in uncertainy caused by the 1997 question, and I started to develop a tremendous sense of social justice while witnessing news and history. I was back at AFP as its chief HK correspondent in 1985, and stayed there for another 7 years. And from 1987 up until recently, I had also been a freelance journalist with RTHK, hosting a number of the broadcaster’s TV and radio programmes, including “Media Watch” (Chinese and English editions), “City Forum” and a primary school kid quiz show. I have authored 10 books in Chinese, mostly on media-related subjects, plus a couple about raising children -- essentially sharing my experiences throughout my, ahem, reasonably successful motherhood. I’m currently lecturing parttime journalism at Baptist University and politics at Chinese University. I am married to Philip Bowring, a fellow journalist. We have 2 boys who are now both university graduates. |
