媒體報導 「種票」直譯 vote-planting? 02 Dec 2011

近日有許多有關選舉「種票」的新聞，種票，用英文講，許多人或會直譯vote-planting，但常規英文一般只說vote-rigging。這兩個講法有什麼分別呢？
 
照計，to plant除了解作「栽種」，還有許多負面意思，包括「栽贓」、「做媒」等等︰
 
The police were accused of planting the evidence on the suspect. 警方被控插贓嫁禍這個疑犯。
 
The candidate planted his own supporters in the audience. 那候選人安排了自己的支持者在觀眾堆中「做媒」。
 
I have planted a spy in his team. 我已在他的團隊中安插了一名間諜。
 
They plan to plant a microphone in her office. 他們計劃在她的辦公室安裝米高峰；亦即安裝偷聽器。這句子中的plant，等於place secretly、hide。
 
出奇地，純粹是習用問題吧，vote-planting、to plant votes就是不見得通用。反過來，vote-rigging其實是個大圍籠統的選舉舞弊用語，當中自然包括我們說的人名與地址不符的種票，卻同時涵蓋任何有關選票的「做手腳」事宜，像故意數錯票、丟掉一箱票、明明是有效票卻當做廢票等等。
 
Vote-rigging亦可叫ballot-rigging，這番to rig，解作 to manipulate fraudulently，擺明車馬有欺詐成分，類似的用語有market-rigging，以不法、不道德手段操控市場。
 
如此看來，我們說的種票，似乎是vote-planting比vote-rigging更貼切，不但understandable，根本就是更多人聽得懂。不知怎地，就不是常規的用語。
 
可是，不要因為vote-planting疑似由中文直譯，就稱之為Chinglish；不能就說是錯英文。但為安全計，還是講vote-rigging較為穩妥。
 
日常生活中，我們常常玩中譯英，像「開飯」是open rice；「一就一，二就二」變成one is one, two is two。以語文遊戲視之，無傷大雅，不要過分就好。同時也要理解中、英文之間，確有好些完全可以直譯對等的講法︰
 
「你氣啦﹗」You are wasting your breath!
 
「我冇氣喇﹗」I have no breath left in me!
